EGS23A - Electratón TEC Racing

Project Type

Collegiate Engineering Team

Role

Chief Engineer

Date

January 2022 - February 2023

Location

Monterrey, Nuevo Leon

The EGS23A is the electric single-seater racing car for the TEC Racing – Electratón team, designed and built for the “ELECTRATÓN-2022” Series. Each season consists of five hour-long races in different cities throughout Mexico and a demonstration race at the Mexico City Formula E-Prix.

Since 2022 I have been the chief engineer in charge of the design, construction and continuous development of the EGS23A. Throughout this time I have and supervised and directly worked on all vehicle subsystems, gaining valuable hands-on engineering experience and management-related soft skills. In this page I will briefly explain some of the development projects I have personally worked on.

Bodywork and Aerodynamics:
Throughout the design and manufacturing phase I worked with our team sponsor MOLDEM – Composites And Fibers to redesign our Aero package changing the bodywork to a single piece design manufactured through an open mold fiberglass layup.

Chassis
Having just finished the EGS20G gravity car the EGS23A chassis was manufactured having learnt from our previous mistakes. With the help of alignment jigs I aided in welding the steel chassis improving my welding which at the time could amiably be called “poor”. Thankfully the tube and plasma cut tabs/brackets have held up so far.

Suspension and steering
Another point we improved on for the EGS23A was the suspension wishbones. To ensure the suspension elements were manufactured as desired I worked with the suspension team to make and slice welding jigs and subsequently verify the geometrical accuracy of the elements with one of our university’s metrology machines.

Drive train and braking
Perhaps the most modified and troublesome subsystem, the EGS23A drive train and braking subsystem has gone through many iterations. Our main task was manufacturing and modifying adequate couplers, steering knuckles and brake disk to make our components compatible with commercial calipers, half shafts and differentials

Power and electronics
In the power and electronics subsystem, I have mainly restrained myself to overview and monitoring of the 2022 season projects. The main change for the EGS23A was the upgrade to 48V system resulting from the acquisition of a new Lithium-Ion battery pack
